The oldest known instrument in the world, archaeologists have uncovered flutes made of animal bones or mammoth tusks from 53,000 to 45,000 years ago. A member of the woodwind family of instruments, the flute produces sound when air is applied by the player. But unlike other woodwinds instruments, it does not use a reed, rather air is blown across an opening. Standard concert flutes are pitched in C and have a range of three octaves making it one of the highest-pitched orchestra or band instruments. Most beginning flute players start their musical journey by renting their first instrument. When it comes to flutes, as well as most brass and woodwind musical instruments, there are numerous advantages to renting over buying.
Renting is more affordable
Purchasing a new flute can easily cost a thousand dollars and up. By contrast, you can rent a flute for just around $30 per month. And if you rent from NEMC, all the money you pay in rent can be applied to purchase.
Kids can change their minds
As a parent you know, what a child is excited about one day can change the next. Compared to the high upfront cost of buying, renting a flute gives you much greater flexibility. If they decide they’d rather play something else, you can easily swap your rental to a different instrument usually for no added cost. If they decide not to continue in band, you can cancel your rental at any time with no penalty.
