On June 27, 2018, NEMC hosted its 4th annual Summer Workshop for Music Teachers co-sponsored by Alfred Publishing and KHS America’s Academic Alliance for music education. At the event this year, teachers were able to earn professional development hours while being educated and trained on new techniques for ensemble curriculum, exploring innovative technology for music classrooms, basic band instrument repairs, and managing percussion sections. The workshop was presented by experts in the fi eld, including Chris Bernotas, Alfred Music Clinician, Keith W. Hodgson, The University of the Arts, and Dr. Kenneth Piascik, Black River Middle School, Chester, NJ. Dr. Piascik is endorsed by Marimba One, Vic Firth, and Sabian.
The morning session, presented by Chris Bernotas, saw band directors of all levels playing as an ensemble in a reading session of new works for band from Alfred Publishing. Demonstrations of rehearsal techniques and effective conducting tools, as well as creative warm-ups and ensemble development concepts were also covered, all with the goal of creating rehearsals that are more efficient and effective. KHS America provided several background and percussion instruments for use.
The teachers were treated to an outdoor picnic lunch and a tour of the NEMC facility. Everyone left with a certificate for professional development hours and a summer gift bag filled with goodies to take to the beach. Many teachers also received door prizes that were donated by our sponsors. Please visit NEMC.COM for information on future educator events.
“This event represents NEMC’s ongoing commitment to supporting music education, and the many educators we are privileged to serve. We look forward to continuing these efforts to plan and host similar events in 2019, and beyond.”
